How to choose an industrial polishing compound.

Start with the work the process must perform. Colour, product family and “stronger” or “finer” only become useful after removal, finish, tool, machine and cleaning requirements are explicit.

1. Separate removal from finish.

Cut describes the ability to remove or modify the incoming surface. Colour, gloss or brightening describes the finish developed after that surface has been prepared. One product may contribute to both, but a high-gloss compound cannot compensate reliably for defects left by the previous operation.

Is the current limit a defect-removal problem, a finish-development problem, or a repeatability/cleaning problem?

2. Define the incoming surface.

Record material grade, forming or casting condition, abrasive preparation, defect depth and direction. “P240” alone does not fully describe the surface because belt type, contact wheel, pressure, wear and direction also matter.

3. Choose the compound form around the production system.

4. Select the tool with the compound.

Sisal, cotton, tampico, nonwoven, contact wheels and hybrid constructions change compound transfer, contact pressure, ventilation, conformity and heat. Treating the compound as independent from the tool is one of the fastest ways to create unstable recommendations.

5. Read published ratings correctly.

A cut/colour scale is useful within the family and source that defines it. Abrasive-power and bonding values describe different fields. Do not merge source-specific ratings into a universal score unless a validated internal method explicitly supports the conversion.

6. Define the acceptance criteria.

“Mirror” should be translated into measurable or inspectable criteria: reference panel, lighting, line visibility, roughness, haze, colour, contamination, cleaning, cycle time and consistency.

7. Release only inside a stated boundary.

The validated process record should identify part, material, incoming condition, compound, batch, tool construction, dimensions, machine, operating window, cleaning and acceptance criteria. A change in one critical variable can trigger review or retest.
